advice on how to care for your flooring...

Carpet

Laminate

Contrary to popular belief, never mop your laminate floor and try to avoid excessive moisture contact. Also your laminate floor is not bomb proof so protect your floor using felt pads or castors under your furniture.
Vacuum clean or sweep the floor using the recommended manufacturers microfibre to remove dirt and dust. When necessary, use a damp cloth.
The removal of ordinary stains:
1. Apply recommended manufacturers spray cleaner on the stain.
2. Allow cleaner to dissolve the stains for a few minutes.
3. Wipe the floor with a damp cloth (using only water).
Your laminate floor should not be waxed or polished. Never scrub with steel wool or any other coarse material as this may have a negative effect on the appearance and structure.
There is a common myth that you should let a new carpet ‘settle in’ for a week or so. In fact, entirely the reverse is true. Virtually all new carpets will shed ‘pill’ a small amount of loose fibres and these should be removed by vacuuming as soon as possible otherwise the fibres will be walked back into the carpet and can cause a matted appearance. We recommend you vacuum your carpet at least once a week.
Loop pile carpets, particularly wool berbers, should not be cleaned with a vacuum which has a beater attachment – this can cause excessive fluffing and matting – this type of carpet should be vacuumed with the suction head only.
Entrance mats will reduce the amount of dirt carried on to

your carpets from outside the home, but please remember that these mats must also be cleaned regularly.
Accidental spillages on carpets are a fact of life and no carpet is totally stain proof. Remember the golden rule that instant treatment can mean instant cure. Never rub, always blot to a damp dry state. Liquid spills should be soaked up immediately with absorbent tissue preferably white, or a clean, dry cloth. Avoid excessive rubbing and always work from the outside edges of the stain to the centre to avoid spreading. Use a blunt knife or spoon to gently scrape away any solids.
Carpets fitted in extremely sunny rooms with large windows can be protected from ‘sun bleaching’ by drawing your curtains or blinds during periods of strong sunlight, in fact the same could be said for all types of floor coverings.
An Amtico, Karndean or Spacia floor is extremely hardwearing but even this tough surface can be scratched and marked by sharp grit or other objects. Basic precautions will help keep your floor looking good.

Vacuum or brush your floor regularly to remove dust and grit. Protect against scratching from furniture feet by using casters or felt pads. Use furniture cups under heavy items or appliances to prevent indentation. Use fibre mats at outside entrances. Avoid rubber or latex backed mats as these may leave stains.

The amount of cleaning necessary will depend on your lifestyle and the colour of the floor. Most owners find that a weekly wipe-over is usually enough. For both Super-Tough Finish and Textured Surfaces (like sawnwood), simply:
1. Sweep or vacuum the floor
2. Dilute recommended manufacturers’ cleaner and apply with a damp mop or a spray.
3. Mop the floor, keeping it as dry as possible, to remove soiling. That’s it!

It is no longer necessary to apply dressing to a new vinyl floor unless you prefer a semi-gloss finish rather than the intended matt finish. Before applying the dressing, the floor must be clean and any ingrained soiling and previous dressing must be removed with floor dressing remover.

Wood

We would suggest placing furniture on castors to protect wood from being scratched and pressure markings.
New urethane finishes require nothing more than sweeping, and manufacturers advise against using wax products. Simply sweep, vacuum, or dust-mop at least once a week to minimize damage caused by dirt, sand, and grit. (Dirt particles act like sandpaper, scratching and dulling wood floors.)

Place rugs or floor mats at entrances to trap dirt, and shake them out frequently. Use a broom with fine, exposed ends to trap grit. When vacuuming, use a brush attachment; beater bars can dent a floor's finish.
Wipe up spills as they happen. If your finish is in good shape, you can lightly damp-mop the floor using a neutral-pH wood cleaner or products recommended by the flooring manufacturer.
Urethane-finished floors in high-traffic areas may need to be recoated every 3 to 5 years. This involves cleaning and lightly abrading the old surface before applying fresh coats of urethane. Recoating should be done by a flooring professional.

Floors treated with a penetrating finish should be swept and kept clear of dirt. Tung oil may need to be reapplied every 5 to 10 years, or it can be applied just in high-traffic areas.
You can wax a floor treated with tung oil. If you do, though, never use water on it, and avoid spills; water will leave white spots. A waxed floor will need to be stripped and rewaxed once or twice a year.
Don't wear spiky high heels, golf shoes, or any other shoes with exposed nails or cleats. They are likely to dent and damage the floor. Put felt pads under furniture legs to prevent scratches. For the same reason, you might want to be extra-vigilant about trimming your dog's nails regularly.
